Manchester United are reportedly considering a summer move for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha as they aim to address key tactical issues and a persistent lack of goals. Cunha is viewed as an ideal fit for the club’s current needs under new manager Ruben Amorim. The Brazilian forward is seen as a ready-made solution to two of United's most pressing problems: an underperforming attack and compatibility with Amorim’s tactical setup.
Despite playing for a Wolves side that has largely struggled in the Premier League, Cunha has emerged as one of the most effective attackers in the league over the past two seasons, contributing an impressive 37 goals and assists. This accounts for nearly 40% of Wolves’ total attacking output, showcasing his importance to the team. He has continued this form into the current season, netting 14 goals and on track to surpass the single-season records of other Brazilian stars in the league, such as Roberto Firmino and Gabriel Martinelli.
In contrast, United's attack under Amorim has been frustratingly inefficient. Averaging just 1.2 goals per league game, the team’s goal-scoring woes have been a major concern. The manager has openly expressed dissatisfaction with the team’s lack of attacking potency, which led to the controversial loaning out of key players like Marcus Rashford and Antony. Additionally, Rasmus Hojlund, the club's high-profile striker signing, has yet to justify his hefty price tag, and Bruno Fernandes, traditionally a key figure in attack, has indicated an interest in a deeper midfield role. This has created a noticeable void in United's advanced midfield positions, further compounding their attacking difficulties.
Cunha’s style of play aligns well with Amorim’s preferred 3-4-2-1 formation, which is currently being deployed at Wolves by manager Vitor Pereira. The 25-year-old operates primarily as a left-sided No.10, a position in which he is capable of both scoring and assisting. His ability to create chances, break defensive lines, and link up play in attack makes him a tactical asset that United currently lack. Cunha’s experience in the Premier League, coupled with his maturity following a difficult stint at Atletico Madrid, adds further value to his profile.
According to reports, Manchester United have placed Cunha on a shortlist of potential targets that also includes Liam Delap. However, Cunha is seen as a more immediate upgrade due to his Premier League experience and his familiarity with Amorim’s system. Reports also suggest that Cunha’s £62 million release clause is significantly more affordable than the £80 million valuation of Viktor Gyokeres, making him a more attractive option for United in their bid to strengthen the squad this summer.
