Newcastle United have significantly ramped up their pursuit of Matheus Cunha, a forward for Wolverhampton Wanderers, as they make early contact with the Brazilian’s camp regarding a potential summer transfer, according to reports by talkSPORT.

Cunha, 25, who permanently joined Wolves from Atlético Madrid in 2023, has been in great form this season, scoring 15 goals in all competitions. His performances have sparked interest from several Premier League clubs who are now closely monitoring his situation.

Despite only recently signing a new contract, Cunha is still very much in demand due to his £62.5 million release clause. This has made him an attractive target for top-tier clubs, with Manchester United also being linked to the forward. United is reportedly looking for a dynamic No. 10 to enhance their attacking options under manager Ruben Amorim's 3-4-2-1 system. However, they have not yet initiated formal talks.

In contrast, Newcastle United appear to have taken a more proactive approach, making the first move by reaching out to Cunha’s representatives. This puts them ahead of other interested parties in the race for his signature. Cunha’s agent is expected to travel to England for in-person meetings with the clubs showing interest, including Manchester United.

Apart from Newcastle and United, other Premier League clubs have also shown interest in the Brazilian. Arsenal has expressed interest, though they are currently focused on other targets such as Viktor Gyökeres and Nico Williams, who are reportedly ahead of Cunha on their transfer shortlist. Nottingham Forest have also been linked with Cunha, but their pursuit may be hindered due to the player’s preference for a move to a top-six club.

However, Cunha’s disciplinary record has been a concern. Recently, he was handed a four-match suspension and fined £50,000 following a red card incident in a match against Bournemouth. Despite this, Cunha remains Wolves’ top scorer and will return to action this weekend against Tottenham Hotspur, which could further showcase his talents and attract more suitors.
