Chelsea defender, Wesley Fofana has strongly condemned the racist abuse he received on social media following his team’s narrow 1-0 Premier League defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.

The French center-back, who played 86 minutes at the Emirates Stadium, became the target of online racial attacks after the match. He later took to social media to expose the abusive messages and call for action against discrimination in football.

Fofana shared screenshots of six racist messages sent to him on Instagram, revealing the extent of the abuse he endured. The defender was at the center of a controversial moment during the match when he made a strong challenge on Arsenal’s Declan Rice, which many believed warranted a red card.

In response to the attacks, Fofana posted a powerful message on Instagram, condemning racism and urging social media platforms to take responsibility.

“2025, stupidity and cruelty can no longer hide. It’s not just football; it’s not just a ‘game’ when some believe that their skin colour makes them superior to others,” he wrote.

“It’s time for things to change, for platforms to take action, and for everyone to take responsibility.”

Chelsea, Premier League Condemn Racist Abuse

Following the revelation of the racist messages, Chelsea Football Club swiftly issued a statement denouncing the abuse directed at Fofana and vowing to take strong action against those responsible.

“Chelsea Football Club is appalled and disgusted by the recent rise in online racial abuse towards our players,” the club stated.

“The abuse Wesley Fofana has been subjected to following yesterday’s fixture is abhorrent and will not be tolerated. Wes and all our players have our full support.”

The club further emphasized that it would work with relevant authorities to track down those responsible and take the strongest possible action against them.

The Premier League also voiced its support for Fofana and reiterated its stance against discrimination in football.

“We work with social media platforms and the authorities to ensure any individuals found guilty of abuse face the strongest possible consequences,” a Premier League spokesperson said.

“Football is for everyone, and there is no place for discrimination in our game or wider society.”

Chelsea have also confirmed that they will be contacting Instagram to demand immediate action against the accounts responsible for the racial abuse.

Fofana’s experience is part of a worrying trend of racism in football, with several high-profile players facing similar attacks in recent months. Other victims of online racial abuse include Fulham’s Calvin Bassey, Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw, and England defender Kyle Walker.

Samuel Okafor, chief executive of anti-discrimination organization Kick It Out, recently told BBC Sport that racism in English football has “reached crisis point,” urging social media platforms and football authorities to take immediate action to tackle the issue.

Fofana, who has made 14 Premier League appearances this season after recovering from a hamstring injury, has now joined the growing list of players demanding stricter policies against racism in football and greater accountability from online platforms.

The incident highlights the urgent need for football governing bodies and tech companies to work together in implementing stricter measures to protect players and eradicate racial abuse from the sport.
