Arteta criticizes Everton penalty decision in EPL

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has strongly criticised the decision to award Everton a penalty during Saturday’s 1-1 draw, stating that “there is no way” it should have stood. The match, which saw Arsenal take the lead through Leandro Trossard, became contentious after Myles Lewis-Skelly was penalised for allegedly fouling Jack Harrison inside the penalty area.

Iliman Ndiaye successfully converted the penalty to equalize for Everton. However, the decision was controversial, especially after VAR referee Stuart Atwell decided not to overturn the on-field decision made by referee Darren England, despite the minimal contact involved.

Arteta voiced his frustration after the match, telling reporters, “The referee decides to give a penalty that changes the course of the game. After seeing it 15 times, there is no way that is a penalty. If it is, then [Jake] O’Brien has to be sent off and Everton should be down to 10. That’s clear.” The Spanish coach made it clear that he felt the decision was unfair and had a significant impact on the outcome of the game.

The draw leaves Arsenal 11 points behind league leaders Liverpool, with their chances of winning the Premier League title continuing to dwindle. The upcoming clash between Liverpool and Fulham could further increase the gap at the top of the table, leaving Arsenal with limited opportunities to close the points difference with just seven games remaining in the season.

With the Premier League title seemingly out of reach, Arsenal's focus now shifts to their upcoming Champions League quarterfinal clash. The Gunners will host Real Madrid on Tuesday night in the first leg of the competition, which represents their best remaining chance for silverware this season.

As for Everton, the point gained from the draw lifts them to 14th place in the Premier League, 12 points clear of the relegation zone, offering them a bit of breathing room as they continue to fight for safety. Arsenal, meanwhile, will look to bounce back from the disappointing result as they aim to salvage their season with a strong showing in the Champions League.
