Nigerian midfielder, Frank Onyeka, is set to return to Brentford at the end of the season after completing a season-long loan at Bundesliga club Augsburg.
Onyeka, who was signed by Brentford for a club-record €10 million in July 2021, made history as the Bees’ first signing following their promotion to the Premier League.

However, in pursuit of more consistent first-team football, the 26-year-old decided to move to Germany on loan last summer, making the switch to Augsburg for the 2023/2024 season.
The loan move was seen as a mutually beneficial arrangement: Onyeka aimed to secure regular playing time, while Brentford sought to provide more minutes to their emerging midfielders.
During his time at Augsburg, Onyeka has impressed, making 28 league appearances, 27 of them as a starter. His performances in midfield have been praised, as he has brought both energy and defensive solidity to the German side.
Despite his strong showing, Augsburg has no plans to make Onyeka's move permanent, according to Sky Sport Germany's transfer expert, Florian Plettenberg. There have been no discussions between the two clubs regarding extending his stay in Germany.
Onyeka has been a key figure in Augsburg's midfield, contributing with two goal involvements, and helping the club to climb to 11th place in the Bundesliga standings. With just a few matches remaining, the team is close to reaching the 40-point threshold, which is typically enough to avoid relegation.
The Nigerian midfielder had also signed a new four-year contract with Brentford in 2023, which included an option for an additional year. As his loan spell in Germany nears its conclusion, Onyeka is expected to return to Brentford for pre-season training in preparation for the upcoming campaign.
Brentford, currently sitting 12th in the Premier League with 42 points from 31 games, is all but assured of their place in the top-flight for next season. However, Onyeka’s future with the club remains uncertain, with questions about whether he will be integrated into Brentford’s midfield plans or possibly sent out on another loan deal.
