Former Barcelona defender, Samuel Okunowo has urged Super Eagles right-back Bright Osayi-Samuel to consider leaving Fenerbahçe at the end of the current season, insisting that the Nigerian international has outgrown the Turkish Super Lig and needs to seek new challenges in more competitive environments.

Osayi-Samuel, who has been an integral part of the Fenerbahçe squad since his arrival from Queens Park Rangers in 2021, is approaching the final months of his contract with the Istanbul giants. With his current deal set to expire in a few months, speculations about his future have intensified, linking the 26-year-old defender with potential moves to various European clubs.
Reports suggest that while Fenerbahçe may still attempt to offer a contract extension to retain his services, Osayi-Samuel is expected to weigh his options carefully and make a definitive decision regarding his future once the season concludes.
In a recent interview with Africa Foot, Samuel Okunowo shared his candid thoughts about Osayi-Samuel’s situation, praising the right-back’s growth and contributions to Fenerbahçe while also recommending that he moves on to test himself in one of Europe’s top leagues.
“In my opinion, Bright Osayi-Samuel has surpassed the level of the Turkish league,” Okunowo stated. “I believe he has consistently demonstrated his quality, versatility, and commitment over the past few seasons, and there are many new opportunities out there waiting for a player of his calibre. This is the time for him to pursue those opportunities.”
Okunowo also acknowledged the stature of Fenerbahçe as a club, especially with José Mourinho recently taking charge, but believes Osayi-Samuel has already given his all to the team and it would be unwise to stagnate by remaining in the same league, even if a move to another Turkish side like Galatasaray was considered.
“With all due respect to Fenerbahçe, which remains one of Turkey’s biggest clubs and is now led by a world-class manager like José Mourinho, I think Bright has already given a lot to the club and the fans. At this stage of his career, he should be thinking about his next challenge. Moving to a rival club like Galatasaray might not be the right decision either, as it could tarnish his reputation and legacy in Turkish football,” Okunowo added.
The former Nigerian international further highlighted Osayi-Samuel’s versatility — his ability to play as a right-back, right winger, and even occasionally in midfield — as one of his strongest assets, making him an attractive prospect for clubs in the English Premier League, La Liga, and Serie A.
“He’s a complete modern-day footballer. A solid defender with pace, strength, and good offensive capabilities. He’s also capable of adapting to various tactical systems, and that makes him a great fit for clubs in England, Spain, or Italy,” said Okunowo. “I’m convinced that several clubs in the Premier League, and even in Spain and Italy, would benefit greatly from having a player of his calibre on their roster.”
Okunowo noted that with Osayi-Samuel’s contract situation making him available at no transfer fee this summer, the timing could not be better for him to move abroad. “His contract is running out, which means clubs don’t have to worry about a transfer fee. It’s a golden opportunity for both the player and any interested clubs. But ultimately, the decision is his, and he must choose what aligns with his career goals,” he concluded.
Since joining Fenerbahçe in 2021, Bright Osayi-Samuel has made an impressive 172 appearances in all competitions, scoring seven goals and providing 15 assists. His energetic displays and consistent performances have made him a fan favourite in Istanbul.
With the summer transfer window fast approaching, and the growing interest from European clubs, a move away from the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium now appears increasingly likely as the Super Eagles star looks to embrace the next phase of his career.
