Nigeria has officially thrown its hat into the ring to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, with the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC) confirming that it met the March 28 deadline for expressions of interest.
The proposed host city? Abuja, the nation’s capital — a city that last hosted a major multi-sport event in 2003 when it welcomed Africa to the All-Africa Games.
According to NOC spokesman Tony Nezianya, the expression of interest, which was submitted before the Commonwealth Games Federation deadline, signals Nigeria’s ambition to showcase its national development, elevate its global reputation, and inspire a new generation of athletes.

“This bid presents a unique opportunity to showcase Nigeria’s development, enhance its global standing, and invigorate its sports culture,” Nezianya said in the statement.
However, the bid is still contingent on the formal backing of the Federal Government, which must approve and support the move before Nigeria can officially launch a full bid campaign.
Building on 2003’s Legacy
The NOC emphasized Abuja’s pedigree as a host city, pointing to its experience during the 2003 All-Africa Games as a major advantage in its 2030 vision.
“That experience will provide a solid foundation for Nigeria to host again, showcasing its ability to manage the logistics, hospitality, and infrastructure development required by such events,” the statement read.
“This would also provide a compelling narrative for the nation’s progress and readiness.”
Nigeria’s Second Attempt
This is Nigeria’s second attempt to host the Commonwealth Games after losing the 2014 bid to Glasgow.
Ironically, the Scottish city will now host again in 2026 after stepping in when Australia’s Victoria State pulled out due to ballooning costs.
While some questions remain around funding and infrastructure, the NOC believes hosting the Games in Abuja could trigger critical investments in sports development and infrastructure that would benefit the nation long after the event.
If successful, Nigeria would become the first African nation to host the Commonwealth Games, breaking new ground for the continent and reinforcing its place on the global sporting map.
The official bidding process continues over the coming months, with final decisions expected from the Commonwealth Games Federation in 2026.
