Marshall Munetsi, captain of the Zimbabwe National Team, has emphasized that qualifying for the World Cup would be a more significant achievement for the country than for Nigeria. He made this statement during a pre-match press conference ahead of Zimbabwe’s crucial encounter on Tuesday.
Speaking on the significance of the match, Munetsi stated, “Obviously, Nigeria is a much bigger country in terms of football, but you know, Zimbabwe qualifying for the World Cup will probably be a more historical thing for us than Nigeria qualifying. That’s why I think all the guys want to do something historical.”
The midfielder expressed his determination, saying, “I think it’s going to be a good match for football, so I hope you guys also enjoy it. But also know that we are not here just for a holiday. We are here to try and make our own history by all means necessary.”
Munetsi concluded by reinforcing Zimbabwe’s commitment to securing a victory, stating, “For us, above all, we would take this as a more serious game and try to get maximum points.”
The 28-year-old midfielder has been a key player for Zimbabwe, featuring in 35 games for the national team since making his debut in 2018. His leadership on the field has been instrumental in guiding the Warriors through their World Cup qualification campaign.
In Zimbabwe’s most recent outing, Munetsi showcased his ability by scoring the team’s opening goal in their hard-fought 2-2 draw against Benin Republic. Despite their efforts, the Warriors currently sit at the bottom of the CAF World Cup Qualification Group C, struggling to secure a victory in their first five matches. Their record so far includes three draws and two losses.
As Zimbabwe prepares to face Nigeria, Munetsi and his teammates are determined to turn their fortunes around and keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive. A victory against a football powerhouse like Nigeria would be a historic moment for the country, and the Warriors are eager to seize the opportunity.
