Olympique Marseille are reportedly lining up a summer swoop for Nigerian international defender Jordan Torunarigha, who is set to become a free agent at the end of the current season. The 27-year-old, currently playing for Belgian Pro League side KAA Gent, has entered the final months of his contract and is not expected to renew, sparking interest from several clubs across Europe.

According to a report by Berliner Kurier, Marseille are one of the top clubs keeping a close eye on the situation as they prepare to reinforce their squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. The French giants see Torunarigha as a potential solution to their defensive frailties, which have hindered their otherwise strong Ligue 1 season.

Since arriving at Gent from German Bundesliga side Hertha Berlin in 2022, Torunarigha has established himself as a vital part of the club's backline. He has made 98 league appearances in two seasons, consistently impressing with his defensive awareness, aerial prowess, and composure under pressure. His contributions have been key both in domestic league fixtures and in European competitions, helping Gent remain competitive on multiple fronts.

Despite Gent’s persistent attempts to secure his future with a contract extension, the defender has made it clear he intends to pursue a new challenge, opening the door to a free transfer. As a result, Marseille and several other clubs—including Serie A outfit Torino, Premier League sides Crystal Palace and Leeds United, and previously Bundesliga club Hoffenheim—are circling, hoping to sign him without a transfer fee.

Marseille, who currently sit second in Ligue 1, have enjoyed an excellent attacking season, scoring 62 goals—the second-highest tally in the league. However, their defensive performance has been less impressive. The team has conceded 42 goals so far, the most among the top eight sides in the division. This imbalance has prompted club management to prioritize the recruitment of a solid and experienced centre-back, and Torunarigha has emerged as a leading candidate for the role.

Torunarigha's style of play aligns well with what Marseille needs—his physicality, tackling precision, and leadership at the back could significantly enhance the team’s defensive stability. Moreover, his ability to play both as a left-sided centre-back and as a full-back offers valuable versatility to any coach.

On the international stage, Torunarigha made his debut for the Super Eagles of Nigeria in October 2023, featuring in a friendly match victory over Mozambique. His performances earned him further call-ups, including appearances in the crucial March World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe. As he continues to grow in stature at the international level, his market value and reputation have also seen a notable boost.
