Liverpool and Everton have been denied their request to reschedule the upcoming Merseyside derby, after the Premier League rejected their appeal to move the fixture forward by a day.
The highly anticipated clash, originally scheduled for Wednesday, April 2, will proceed as planned, despite both clubs citing fixture congestion and competitive fairness as reasons for the proposed adjustment.
According to Mail Sport, Everton, who face Arsenal three days after the Merseyside derby, sought the change to allow for additional recovery time. Meanwhile, Liverpool, still in the midst of their intense title challenge, aimed to better balance their demanding schedule.
However, the Premier League ruled that Everton’s upcoming fixture does not breach the league’s 60-hour recovery rule, meaning there was no regulatory basis for altering the derby date. As a result, the fixture will go ahead as originally planned at Goodison Park.
Liverpool, who currently lead Arsenal by 12 points in the title race, will look to regain momentum following recent setbacks, including defeats to Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League and Newcastle in the Carabao Cup final.
On the other hand, Everton are focused on securing vital points as they approach the end of the season, particularly with the added significance of their final campaign at Goodison Park before moving to their new stadium.
Despite their unsuccessful appeal, both clubs are now preparing intensely for the derby, which remains a crucial fixture in their respective campaigns.
