Fisayo Dele-Bashiru provided a crucial assist as Lazio clinched a vital 1–0 win over Ademola Lookman’s Atalanta at the Gewiss Stadium on Sunday evening, continuing their push for a spot in European competition next season.
Atalanta, coming off a disappointing 1–0 loss to Fiorentina last weekend, were eager to bounce back and maintain their momentum in the Serie A title race. However, despite playing on home soil, they found themselves on the wrong side of a second consecutive defeat, with Lazio taking full advantage to claim all three points and keep their European aspirations alive.
The first half of the match was a cagey affair, with both teams struggling to break down the opposition's defensive setups. There were few clear chances on goal, as both sides focused on maintaining solid defensive organization rather than taking risks in attack. As a result, neither team was able to carve out many opportunities to take the lead during the opening 45 minutes.
However, the game began to open up after the break, and Lazio pounced on a momentary lapse in Atalanta’s defensive concentration to seize control of the match. In the 65th minute, Dele-Bashiru reacted quickly to a loose ball in the air, leaping highest to meet it before directing a well-placed header into the path of his teammate, Gustav Isaksen. The Danish winger took a perfect first touch and fired the ball into the net, past Atalanta’s goalkeeper, to give Lazio a crucial lead.
The goal proved to be the match-winner, and Lazio moved up to sixth in the Serie A standings with the victory, boosting their hopes of securing a European spot next season. The win also provided a much-needed confidence boost for Marco Baroni’s side as they head into the business end of the season.
Dele-Bashiru, who played the full 90 minutes, was a key figure in Lazio’s midfield. His disciplined performance throughout the match, coupled with his ability to make vital contributions in attack, underlined his growing importance to the team. The 24-year-old Nigerian has now netted three goals and recorded one assist in 18 league appearances this season, establishing himself as an influential player for Lazio in Serie A.
Following the win, Lazio will look to build on this result as they continue their quest for European qualification. On the other hand, Atalanta will need to regroup quickly after this defeat if they hope to remain competitive in the race for a top-four finish and secure a place in next season’s European competitions.
