The head coach of the Super Eagles, Eric Chelle, has voiced his frustration following Nigeria’s 1-1 draw with Zimbabwe in Uyo on Tuesday. He lamented the team’s inability to convert numerous goal-scoring opportunities, particularly in the first half of the match.

The Super Eagles appeared dominant from the start, creating multiple scoring chances. However, their failure to capitalize on these opportunities proved costly. Despite their attacking efforts, they were only able to take the lead in the 74th minute when Victor Osimhen found the back of the net. The lead was short-lived as Tawanda Chirewa stunned the home crowd with a stoppage-time equalizer for Zimbabwe, securing a crucial point for his team.

This disappointing result leaves Nigeria in fourth place in Group C with seven points, trailing group leaders South Africa by six points. The dropped points put additional pressure on the Super Eagles as they continue their campaign to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking after the game, Chelle expressed disappointment over his team’s inability to put the match to bed early on, stating that they had created enough chances to win convincingly.

“We could have scored ten goals in the first half. We made too many mistakes in the final moments, and Zimbabwe defended well,” Chelle said in his post-match press conference.

He further criticized his team’s attitude after taking the lead, noting that they became complacent, which ultimately cost them all three points.

“When we scored, we thought the game was over. It’s tough because my players were the better team on the pitch, but we didn’t finish the job,” he added.

With just four games remaining in the qualifiers, Nigeria faces an uphill battle to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament. The Super Eagles must now focus on a strong finish in their remaining matches to keep their World Cup dreams alive.

Despite the setback, Chelle remains hopeful that his team can still secure at least a second-place finish in the group, which could offer a pathway to qualification through the playoffs.

“I am disappointed for my players and the country, but we will fight for second place,” Chelle concluded, urging the team to regroup and give their best in the upcoming fixtures.
