The family of former heavyweight boxing champion, George Foreman, has officially announced his passing, marking the end of an era for one of boxing’s most legendary figures.
Known as ‘Big George,’ Foreman passed away on March 21 at the age of 78, as confirmed in a heartfelt statement released by his family on Friday.
Foreman’s legacy in the boxing world is unparalleled. He first gained global recognition after winning an Olympic gold medal in 1968 before going on to capture the world heavyweight title twice—an achievement made even more remarkable by the fact that he won his second title 21 years after the first, making him the oldest heavyweight champion in history at the age of 45.
One of the most memorable moments of his career was his legendary bout against Muhammad Ali in the famous Rumble in the Jungle fight in 1974, where he suffered a historic defeat. Despite this, Foreman remained one of the most dominant fighters in the sport, finishing his professional boxing career with an astonishing 76 wins, including 68 knockouts, nearly doubling Ali’s total.
Following his retirement from boxing in 1997, Foreman transitioned into business, making a groundbreaking decision that would change his financial fortunes forever. He licensed his name to the George Foreman Grill, a best-selling kitchen appliance that ultimately generated far greater earnings than his illustrious boxing career ever did.
In an emotional Instagram post shared by his family on Friday night, they expressed their deep sorrow, writing: “Our hearts are broken.”
The statement continued: “A devout preacher, a devoted husband, a loving father, and a proud grand and great grandfather, he lived a life marked by unwavering faith, humility, and purpose.”
Further highlighting his impact beyond the ring, the statement added: “A humanitarian, an Olympian, and a two-time heavyweight champion of the world, he was deeply respected—a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name—for his family.”
Fans and admirers from around the world have taken to social media to pay tribute to Foreman, recognizing his remarkable contributions to boxing, business, and philanthropy. His influence, both inside and outside the ring, will undoubtedly live on for generations to come.
