
Botswana has officially been selected to host the 2026 World Athletics Relays, marking a historic milestone as the first African nation to stage the prestigious global event.

 ÂThe announcement was made by World Athletics on March 25, 2025, following a highly competitive selection process that evaluated multiple bids from different nations.
 ÂBotswana's bid, spearheaded by the Botswana Athletics Association (BAA), stood out due to the country's growing reputation in global athletics, excellent sporting infrastructure, and commitment to sports development.
 ÂThe official bid was submitted on February 21, 2025, strategically aligning with Botswana’s plans to incorporate the event into the country’s 60th Independence anniversary celebrations in 2026.

 ÂA delegation from the World Athletics Bid Committee visited Botswana between February 21 and 23, 2025, conducting an extensive assessment of the facilities, accommodation, transport networks, and overall readiness to host the major international competition.
 ÂDuring their visit, the committee inspected the key venues, including the Botswana National Stadium in Gaborone, which will serve as the primary location for the relays.
 ÂGovernment and Athletic Community Support
 ÂBotswana’s bid was strongly supported by the government, local sports organizations, and the vibrant athletics community, who emphasized the nation’s capability to deliver a world-class sporting experience.
 ÂOabona Theetso, BAA Vice President for Administration, expressed confidence in Botswana’s ability to successfully host the event.
 Â“Botswana has competed in the World Relays for years, and now the time has come for us to be the hosts. We have the facilities, the infrastructure, and a government fully committed to promoting sports tourism and development,” Theetso stated.
